Lake Trasimeno, with its environs, is one of the most characteristic and picturesque areas of Perugia. Closed in on three sides by rolling hills, with its vast water surface, sometimes green, sometimes the colour of the sky, it hides in areas under the reeds of the banks. It has always been an extraordinary attraction, a model of unique spaciousness and of balanced serenity in the panorama. Three islands emerge from the Lake: La Polvese - 64,4 ha – owned by the provincial Administration; La Maggiore - 23,2 ha – still lived on permanently; La Minore - 6,5 ha – uninhabited and partially a totally natural environment. The marsh vegetation both above and under water, is particularly rich. The coast strip to the lake basin presents a riparial vegetation as well as ilex grove, oak and water lilies. On the islands as well as a hydrophilic and bank vegetation, also present are olives and pine trees. The waters of the lake are home to a rich fish fauna, partially of quality: tench, eel, carp, pike, bass. With the emission of the catfish, or at least caused by the modification of the habitat, the balance of the species was weakened. The avifauna is present with birds of prey like the harrier eagle, the royal owl and the fishing hawk, but most of all, with the elimination of hunting in the park area, the migratory fauna has multiplied.Today various birds live around Trasimeno lake: the heron, the stork, the little egret, the bittern, the wild swan, the whistle duck, the mallard, the tufted duck, wild ducks, the mergangster, the stilt, seagulls, the coot, the moorhen and the grebe. In recent years the presence of the cormorant has become significant in number- 2.000/3.000 – accompanied by an attempt of nidification to the point that it has become necessary to dissuade them to do so. Other species of fauna are contained in their reproduction: the coypu and the wild boar.
