Park's photo - View of the lake

Trasimeno and its territory were part of Etruria and the tombs and Etruscan remains were found above all in the area of Castiglione del Lago. The Romanization of the area took place with the battle of 217 b.C when Hannibal eliminated the legions and 16.000 soldiers lost their lives in the hills above Tuoro and on the banks of the lake. Rome left its traces with its great hydraulic science to the Trasimeno with the construction of the first emissary destined to regularize the level of the waters and to prevent flooding, anticipating a technology which was repeated by Braccio Fontebraccio and again in our days. The structure of the park is still today mainly what it was in medieval times with its castles and city walls like Passignano, Monte del Lago and Castiglione del Lago. Among the castles, most of which are in ruin, particularly important to mention are: that of the Polvese Island and the Maggiore Island, but more important, and excellently kept, is that of Castiglione del Lago, connected to the Palace of the Cornia by a long walk in a castle wall which was protagonist in the battle of Lepanto. Also important is the town planning structure of the fishing towns, for example in San Feliciano or on the Maggiore Island. The Trasimeno has often touched artists’ sensitivity: it was one of the Perugino’s (Pietro Vannucci) main themes in his landscapes; the futurist Gerardo Dottori also made use of aeropainting above the lake.
